Cranford Girls Basketball drop to 8-2 with last-second loss to Linden
When the Cranford Cougars took the court Friday night against the Linden Tigers, they knew they were going to have a battle on their hands. In the first four minutes of the game, it looked like it was going to be even tougher than they thought.
Using a combination of speed, aggressiveness and athleticism, Linden jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the first four minutes of the game, during which Cranford was unable to make a field goal, and only got on the board with a point from Mairead McKeary from the charity stripe.
After a Cranford timeout, the Cougars settled down and began to get on the board with baskets from Miller, McCoy, McGovern and McKeary, and were able to close the deficit to 14-10 by the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Miller and McGovern handled the scoring for the Cougars, aided by assists from Jenna Goeller who led the team with five. The Cougars still trailed Linden at the half 22-19.
In the first half, aside from being outscored, Linden out-rebounded Cranford by a 26-12 margin, and the Cougars shot just 6 for 26 from the floor.
In the second half, after adjustments by head coach Jackie Dyer, the Cougars jumped out on a 9-0 run behind baskets by McCoy and Miller to take a 28-22 lead three minutes into the half. By the end of the third quarter, the Cougars were still ahead 32-27.
In the final minute of play, Cranford's effort to run out the clock were stymied by Linden's aggressive defense and some quick foul calls which sent the Cougars to the line shooting 1 and 1 with 10 seconds remaining and a 43-42 lead.
Cranford's first shot rimmed out and Linden's Shannon Wheeler raced up the court with the ball in the closing seconds. Morgan Miller blocked Wheeler's shot under the basket, but the Linden star grabbed her own rebound and shot again in heavy traffic. The shot missed, but Cranford was called for the foul, sending Wheeler to the line with 3 seconds left. Wheeler made good on both shots, giving Linden a 44-43 lead. Cranford's last second effort to race up the court and get a shot in fell short, and the Cougars suffered their second defeat of the season.
For Cranford, Morgan Miller led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Jess McCoy with 14. McCoy also led all players with 13 rebounds and four steals. Jenna Goeller led the Cougars with five assists.
The Cougars will look to rebound on Jan. 17 when the take on Brearley at 4 p.m. in Cranford.
