Miller Leads Cougars Past Elizabeth

It can often be hard for a team to hit the court with energy the day after a difficult game.  The Cranford Cougars loss to Governor Livingston on Thursday night was among the most difficult of games; a physical, back-and-forth battle against the county's only unbeaten squad.  A game like that not only takes a physical toll on a team, but also an emotional one.
When the 9-3 Cougars tipped off against the 3-9 Minutemen on Friday, it wasn't very surprising that Cranford got off to a slow start.  After turning the ball over six times in the first two quarters, the Cougars headed to the locker room at half time hanging on to a 23-18 lead.
The second half, however, was a different story.  Behind Senior Morgan Miller's 4 steals, the Cougars clamped down defensively on the Minutemen holding them to just 11 points in the second half.  Miller led the team on both sides of the court, scoring a game high 18 points and adding 4 assists and 5 rebounds.  Cranford's usual stingy defense did the trick, and the Cougars went on the win the game 43-31 to improve to 10-3.
Junior Jenna Goeller continued to be a long-range threat for the Cranford squad, tossing in a pair from behind the line to contribute 6 points as well as a pair of assists and a pair of rebounds.
Meg Pringle continued to get playing time, adding two points against Elizabeth.  Kaitlin McGovern also added a bucket as well as 2 assists and a block.  Sophomore Mairead McKeary, who has evolved into the defensive specialist for the Cougars and is usually given the job of guarding their fastest player, added 3 points and 2 assists.  Jess McCoy led the team with 9 rebounds and contributed 4 assists, a steal and 3 blocks to go with her 12 points.
The Cougars get back on the court tonight (Tuesday) to face off for the second time this season against Oak Knoll in Summit at 4:00pm
